Why apply for an E101 certificate?
Working in the Netherlands as an expat from another EU country brings many opportunities, but it also requires some important choices. One of these choices is deciding whether or not to enter the local social insurance plan in the country where you work. Doing so can sometimes be costly, as social insurance premiums may be lower in your home country. If you apply for an E101 certificate, this problem can be avoided. The E101 certificate allows you to apply for a special exemption on local social insurance premiums, meaning you can work abroad while still being covered by the social security system of your native country. In many cases, employees who apply for the E101 certificate will incur lower social security costs.
How to apply for the E101 certificate
In order to be eligible to apply for an E101 certificate, you must be a resident of an EEA country working in a different country within the EEA. Any employee can apply for the E101 certificate, except those who work in international transportation. Also, the duration of your stay is important if you decide to apply for an E101 certificate. If you are being seconded by your employer and will be working in an EEA country for less than 12 months, you can apply for an E101 certificate relatively quickly. This process takes longer if you plan to work abroad for more than a year. However, certain European countries allow expats to apply for an E101 certificate extension for up to five successive years. For optimum results, applications should be tended through the correct channels.
